San Francisco attorney Chelsea Jarvis thinks her assignment in Tokyo is only to negotiate a contract with Hayashi, head of a corporation, but the main reason for her presence is to bring back to her client a thick, wax-sealed envelope. Meanwhile, she becomes romantically involved with Yoshi Moore, Professor of English Literature, visiting Japan to explore his Japanese roots. Because of the explosive nature of the envelope's contents, the couple is forced to take refuge with Yoshi's relatives as they flee through a minefield of situations, attempting to escape vicious underworld predators.
As with Winther's previous two thrillers, "The Jaguar Dances" (set in Peru) and "The Leopard Sings" (set in Kenya), "The Tiger Drums" (set in Japan) involves a woman associated with the fictional San Francisco law firm of McCloskey, Warner & Jarvis.
In "The Cat Trio," the collective name for Barbara Winther's three thrillers, the cat takes on many guises while it pads silently beneath the people who move across the pages.
This manuscript won an Editor's Award in the "Mainstream Novel" category from the Pacific Northwest Writers' Association.
Author Barbara Winther lives in Washington on Bainbridge Island with her husband, a retired San Francisco attorney. Winther, an avid world traveler, instills a strong sense of place in all of her writing. www.BarbaraWinther.com

Once again Barbara has transported me to another exciting location and spun her mystery through it beautifully. Her attention to detail is excellent; showing her thorough knowledge of the place she sets her mystery in. I always enjoy her character development and wish the book could go on and on and on. My cousins wife Masami, born in Hiroshima, will receive a copy of this book and be as excited about reading it as I was. I'm sorry the trilogy is ended as I've so enjoyed each one of them!Product details

The Tiger Drums The Cat Trio Book 3 edition by Barbara Winther Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This Tiger, the third in the series, is set in Japan where it starts in a mega-city, corrupt business environment and moves to a more rural traditional setting of revered traditions where family cohesion is able to overcome a pervasive criminal conspiracy. Winther's descriptions of the cities and the countryside sites sets the scene for a story that gains in momentum until it races along with tiger-like speed and determination. Once you have started on the ride you won't want to put The Tiger Drums down.
The lovely protagonist flies from San Francisco to Japan sent by her husband on a routine business mission. But the mission is dangerously different.
The suspensful story is enhanced by Winther's depiction of traditional and modern Japan. Action and thrills abound, and new-found love overcomes international obstacles with a promising "Sayonara"
Chelsea Jarvis is a tall, confident attorney living an upscale singles life in San Francisco. The moment she steps off a plane in Japan things get murky. She struggles with the language and customs. The "businessman" sent to welcome her to Japan might be a member of the Yakuza (gangster). And, to thicken the plot, she meets a handsome, slightly nerdy Japanese-American Professor named Yoshi who is returning to Japan in search of his roots.
Before long Chelsea and Yoshi are ensnared in international intrigue, double-deals with shady characters, and last but far from least--romance. The story turns, twists and loops back on itself with generous portions of cut-throat international cyber crime and beautiful, slow-moving Old Japan with its pagodas, cherry blossoms and ancient traditions.
Well worth your time. Excellent.
As Uncle Iiyama explains to the 2 protagonists in this third of Barbara Winther's "big cat" thrillers, "When a tiger needs a meal, do you expect it to play a drum to announce its presence?". In this book, there are figurative hungry tigers lurking everywhere from the crowded streets of Tokyo to the carefully designed quiet of a traditional spa to the most remote mountain shrine, and only one plays a drum.
To add to the pleasure of a carefully crafted plot, the author's skill with detail leaves many vivid images in the reader's mind and may even convince a few, like me, that they speak Japanese!
The cat pads its way through this book as it does through the other two books in The Cat Trio. This book, set in Japan, makes you feel as if you are there with its descriptions of places and customs. The story is an exciting adventure that builds to a thrilling ending. Loved the character of Grandma. You will not be disappointed
As with the previous two books in this series it was really hard to put down once I began reading. I am not sure which was more fascinating, the mystery which kept me on the edge of my seat, or the feeling of being transported to a place and culture I will probably never experience for myself. These feelings apply to the previous two books, as well. I would sure love to see more, and advise anyone who loves a good mystery in a great setting with fascinating people to dive in.
I'm sorry the trilogy is ended as I've so enjoyed each one of them!
